About

Somebody should have shown you this.

Mac for Newbies is a free course that takes you from your first twenty minutes on a Mac to running the whole machine without touching the trackpad. A hundred bite-sized lessons, ten levels, an exercise in every one.

Why it exists

Macs are sold as obvious. For a lot of people they are not. You get a beautiful machine, no manual, a Dock you do not understand, and a Delete key that refuses to delete anything. Most people work around that forever and assume everyone else got a briefing they missed.

They did not. There is just no good place that teaches this in order, in plain language, without either talking down to you or assuming you already know what a Finder is.

So we made one.

Why a hundred small ones

Learning your Mac shouldn’t feel like swallowing a whole watermelon. So you take it one bite at a time.

No giant manual. No weekend sacrificed to YouTube. No need to become the kind of person who has strong opinions about file systems. Each lesson teaches one useful thing, gives you a small exercise to do it, and gets out of your way. Some take a minute. Some take less.

All hundred take you from figuring out the basics to doing things with your Mac that probably seem slightly ridiculous from where you’re standing now.

What makes it different

  • It is in an order. Not a pile of tips. Level 1 is what you need on day one; level 10 is rebuilding your Mac from a file. Each one earns the next.
  • You do it, you do not read it. Every lesson has a thirty-second exercise, plus a line telling you exactly what should happen so you can tell whether it worked.
  • It says when things are confusing. Because sometimes the Mac is odd, and being told so is more useful than being told you will get used to it.
  • It is free, and stays free. No account, no wall at lesson eleven, no course hiding behind a button.

Who made it

Mac for Newbies is a project of Digital High Status, a small studio that makes Mac software, including ClipDrawer, a clipboard and snippet drawer for the things you copy a hundred times.

That is the whole business model, and it is worth saying plainly: the course is free because people who get properly good at their Mac tend to want better tools, and we make some. Nothing here is recommended because somebody paid us, because nobody has.
